What is red belly short neck turtle?

The red belly short-neck turtle, also known as the eastern long-neck turtle, is a medium-sized freshwater turtle native to eastern Australia. They are named after their reddish-brown skin on their belly and neck. Red belly short-neck turtles can grow up to 25cm in length and have a lifespan of up to 50 years.

These turtles are omnivores and primarily feed on aquatic plants, insects, fish, and small invertebrates. During breeding seasons, male turtles aggressively compete for females and engage in a ritualized courtship behavior that involves neck and head movements.

Red belly short-neck turtles are popular as pets, but it is illegal to catch them in the wild. They are relatively easy to care for in captivity, requiring a large aquarium with both aquatic and dry land areas, clean water, and a varied diet. However, they can be carriers of salmonella, which can be harmful to humans, so it is essential to maintain good hygiene when handling them.
